A fire can start suddenly — and knowing how to use a fire hose properly can help you stop it before it spreads.
Fire hoses are one of the most effective first-response tools in factories, offices, schools, and malls across Ghana.
At Safety Hub Ghana, we not only supply and install fire hose reels and hydrant systems, but we also teach you and your team how to use them safely.
🔥 What Is a Fire Hose Reel?
A fire hose reel is a round drum that holds a hose connected to a water supply.
When a fire breaks out, it allows you to release and direct a strong stream of water onto the fire — especially useful for wood, paper, cloth, or plastic fires (known as Class A fires).
You’ll usually find fire hose reels:
✅ In hallways or near exit doors
✅ In factories and warehouses
✅ Inside schools, offices, and hotels
🧯 Step-by-Step: How to Use a Fire Hose During a Fire
-
Raise the Alarm 🚨
Always alert people around you and activate the nearest fire alarm or call for help. -
Open the Water Valve 💧
Turn the red valve or lever next to the hose reel to start water flow. -
Pull Out the Hose 🧵
Grab the nozzle, pull out enough hose length, and move toward the fire safely. -
Aim at the Base 🎯
Point the nozzle at the base of the fire (not the flames) — this is where the fire feeds. -
Open the Nozzle & Spray 🌊
Twist the nozzle or lever to release water and sweep side to side to cover the burning area. -
Shut Off When Done 📴
Once the fire is out, turn off the valve and neatly roll the hose back onto the reel.
⚠️ Important Safety Tips
✅ Only use fire hoses on Class A fires — wood, paper, cloth, and plastics.
⚡ Never use on electrical or oil fires – use a CO₂ or dry powder extinguisher instead.
🚷 Keep the hose area clear and easy to access at all times.
🧰 Test and inspect your hose reels regularly.
👩🚒 Make sure staff join fire drills and training sessions often.
